Diverticulosis

Condition
  • Antibiotic-driven cilia loss: Antibiotics burn off the microscopic hair-like cilia lining the intestinal tract and colon. This cilia is meant to harbor good bacteria and prevent Streptococcus and E. coli from accessing the intestinal lining. Once destroyed by antibiotics (often from childhood ear infections or recurring strep throat treatment), bad bacteria can create the initial divots and pockets that become diverticulosis.
  • Troublemaker foods feeding bacteria: Bacteria colonizing the colon lining feed on troublemaker foods (gluten, dairy, eggs) to repopulate themselves. This bacterial feeding and repopulation gradually widens the diverticula over time.
  • E. coli bacteria: One or more of the several common E. coli varieties also contribute to the formation of diverticular pockets. E. coli is the runner-up after strep, and many people have pockets of both bacteria. When both are present, they feed on different troublemaker foods simultaneously.
  • Streptococcus bacteria: One or more strains from the over 50 groups of Streptococcus bacteria colonize the colon lining, feeding on troublemaker foods and creating divots and pockets. Strep is the leading cause of diverticulosis and diverticulitis.
